Hydrogen Engine - Clean, Afordable Power
Hydrogen engines are already on the market today and have been on the market for a few years now, well before car manufacture's were offering hydrogen vehicles. Mainly the products that have been produced are hydrogen-fueled power generation systems have been on the market, but only time is going to allow for more hydrogen engines to come onto the market for many different things and not just our vehicles.
A hydrogen engine is currently being tested in an aircraft. A Ford four-cylinder hydrogen engine has been put into the High Altitude Long Endurance aircraft project. They have tested this aircraft and it was able to run continuously over four day's, including simulations at 65,000 feet. The manufactures of the High Altitude Long Endurance aircraft project are testing the aircraft to stay in the air for seven day's, carrying up to 2,000LB while still maintaining communications or surveillance over specific areas.
An aircraft that is able to stay in the air for seven straight days's and has already been simulated to run for four straight days's on a hydrogen engine, seems to be proof enough that hydrogen engines are definitely affordable power. If an aircraft is able to use a Ford four-cylinder hydrogen engine and will run for four continuous days, just think of the effect these engines can have in cars.
So it does seem like hydrogen engines could be the next best thing, allowing a clean affordable engine to put into cars, trucks and SUV's. Since these engines only produce water vapor while running, the effects on the environment will be phenomenal. Within the next few years we are going to see many more hydrogen engines on the market.
It';s being predicted that the 'hydrogen highway' is around 20 years away, but with manufacture's able to get a head start with their hydrogen cars, maybe 20 years isn't that far off. If these hydrogen engines are as clean as they say, and we are able to bring these into our homes or businesses, and not just our vehicles, not only will it help with the environment, it could help out with our wallet's as well.
